FAQ and Good-To-Knows
ABOUT
The world doesn’t run on a strict nine-to-five schedule, and neither do its problems. Sometimes you need a signature witnessed, a document handled, or someone willing to go the extra mile to get things done. That’s where Odd Hours comes in. I bring mobile notary services to your doorstep, workplace, or wherever the situation calls for. Straight answers, upfront prices, and no runaround. I mean, I'll run around. I won't give you the runaround. You know what I mean. Based in Portland, serving the metro and traveling Oregon by arrangement.
THE PROCESS
How does mobile notarization work? You arrange an appointment, tell me what document needs notarizing, and choose a convenient meeting location. I travel to you, verify the signer’s identity, complete the appropriate notarial act, and record the notarization as required. Before the appointment, make sure everyone who needs to sign is available and that the document is ready to be completed. The goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible, without an unnecessary trip across town. What should I bring to a notary appointment? Please have the following ready:
•Your complete document. Bring every page, including any attached notarial certificate. Do not leave required sections blank or bring a document that is incomplete.•Acceptable identification. A current government-issued photo ID is a good starting point. If you do not have one, contact me before the appointment to discuss whether another identification method permitted under Oregon law may be available.•Any required additional signers or witnesses. Everyone whose presence is required should be there at the agreed-upon time.•Instructions from the receiving organization. If a bank, government agency, attorney, or other organization provided specific notarization instructions, bring them along.Unless your document’s instructions say otherwise, wait to sign until the appointment. Some notarial acts require the signature to be made in the notary’s presence. What if I don't know which type of notarization I need?Ask the organization receiving your document what it requires. Common notarial acts include acknowledgments, jurats, and oaths or affirmations, and they serve different purposes.I can explain the available notarial acts, but I cannot choose one for you, determine which legal document you need, or provide legal advice. What if I don't have acceptable photo ID?Don't assume you're out of luck, but please contact me before booking.Oregon law permits certain alternative methods of identifying a signer. One option may involve a credible witness who personally knows you and meets Oregon's requirements. The notary must also be able to establish the witness's identity and follow the required procedure.Simply bringing a friend or relative is not automatically sufficient. I'll need to determine whether an alternative method is legally available for your situation before proceeding.Does everyone have to be present?Anyone whose signature is being notarized must personally appear before the notary. Additional witnesses may also need to be present, depending on the document's requirements.A signer must be willing and able to understand and participate in the notarization. If identity, willingness, or the circumstances raise concerns, the notary may be unable to proceed. Can you notarize documents at a hospital or care facility?Appointments at hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities may be possible by arrangement. Please provide the facility's location and any relevant access requirements when scheduling. The signer must still meet Oregon's requirements for identity, willingness, and capacity. A facility appointment does not waive those requirements.
TRAVEL & APPOINTMENT FEES
Why is there a travel fee in addition to the notary fee?A mobile appointment includes more than the notarial act itself. The appointment fee covers traveling to your location and the first 30 minutes on-site.The notarial fee is separate and applies to each notarial act performed. This means your total depends on the appointment time, travel distance, number of notarial acts, and any additional on-site time or disclosed expenses. The travel and appointment fee is agreed upon before the appointment is confirmed. No one should have to solve a pricing mystery at the door. What does the standard weekday appointment fee include? The $65 standard weekday appointment fee applies Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. It includes travel within a 10-mile one-way radius and the first 30 minutes on-site.Notarial acts are charged separately at $10 per act. If the appointment takes longer than the included on-site time, additional time is $30 per 15-minute block. How do weekend and after-hours fees work? The appointment fee depends on when the appointment takes place:Standard weekday: $65 — Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–8:00 PM.Weekend: $85 — Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 AM–8:00 PM.After-hours, holiday, or severe-weather appointment: $125 — appointments between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM, on holidays, or when severe weather significantly affects travel conditions. Each appointment fee includes travel within the first 10 miles one way and the first 30 minutes on-site.When more than one premium category applies, the highest applicable appointment fee is used rather than stacking multiple premiums. Notarial fees and other applicable charges remain separate.Availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and urgent appointments depends on scheduling. What if you have to travel more than 10 miles? The included travel radius is 10 miles one way. Additional distance is charged at $2 per mile beyond that radius.Longer-distance appointments are reviewed and quoted in advance. Travel throughout Oregon may be available by arrangement, depending on the destination and schedule. What happens if the appointment takes longer than 30 minutes? The first 30 minutes on-site are included in the appointment fee. After that, additional time is charged at $30 per 15-minute block. This includes time spent waiting for signers, documents, or other necessary participants. If you anticipate a complicated appointment or multiple signers, please mention that when booking so the likely time and total cost can be discussed beforehand. Are parking and tolls included? No. Parking charges and tolls are additional when applicable. Any such costs will be disclosed in advance. How much will my appointment cost in total? The total depends on the service and appointment circumstances. For a standard weekday notarization, the calculation is:$65 appointment fee + $10 per notarial act + any applicable additional time or expenses. For example, a weekday visit involving two notarial acts, completed within the first 30 minutes and with no parking or toll costs, would total $85.I’ll confirm the applicable appointment fee and any known additional charges before dispatch.
NOTARIAL SERVICES
What types of notarial acts do you offer?Available services include acknowledgments, jurats, oaths and affirmations, signature witnessing when appropriate, and copy certification where permitted by Oregon law.Do you offer Remote Online Notarization (RON)?Yes. I am approved to perform Remote Online Notarization in Oregon. RON allows eligible notarizations to be completed online through a secure remote notarization platform, without an in-person visit. The fee is $25 per notarial act. No travel or mobile appointment fee applies. The document and notarization must be suitable for remote notarization, and the signer must meet the platform's identity-verification and other applicable requirements. Not every document or requested procedure qualifies for every type of notarial act. Please tell me what the receiving organization has requested so I can confirm whether the service is appropriate. Can you help me fill out my legal documents?I can perform authorized notarial acts, but I cannot provide legal advice, draft legal documents, or tell you which document or legal procedure is right for your situation. Please contact an attorney or the organization receiving your paperwork if you need help determining what to sign or which notarization is required.Does notarization mean my document is legally valid? Not necessarily. Notarization verifies the matters covered by the particular notarial act; it does not guarantee that a document is legally effective, accurate, or accepted by the receiving organization. If you need confirmation that a document meets specific legal or institutional requirements, check with the receiving organization or a qualified attorney. Can you certify copies of documents?Copy certification is available only where permitted by Oregon law. Not every document can be certified by a notary, and some records must be obtained directly from the agency or organization that maintains them. Please describe the document before booking so I can determine whether the requested service is permitted.
FORM I-9 EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION
What is Form I-9 verification?Form I-9 is used by employers to verify an employee's identity and authorization to work in the United States. An employer may designate an authorized representative to complete the employer's document-review and verification responsibilities. When engaged for this service, I act as the employer's authorized representative for the assigned task—not as a notary performing a notarial act. What happens during an I-9 appointment? The employee completes their portion of the form as directed by the employer. During the appointment, the authorized representative examines the employee's acceptable identity and employment-authorization documents, completes the appropriate employer section, and signs in the authorized-representative capacity. The employee must present acceptable documentation from the Form I-9 lists. The employee—not the representative—chooses which acceptable documents to present. The representative must follow the current Form I-9 instructions and the employer's lawful directions. What should the employee bring? The employee should bring the original, acceptable documentation needed for Form I-9 verification, unless an authorized alternative procedure applies under current federal rules. The employer should provide any necessary instructions and ensure the employee has completed the appropriate portion of the form. Please confirm the appointment deadline and any employer-specific instructions before scheduling.Does an I-9 appointment require notarization? No. Form I-9 verification is not a notarial act, and the form does not need to be notarized. The authorized representative completes the assigned verification duties on behalf of the employer. How much does I-9 verification cost? The I-9 employment verification service fee is $50, plus the applicable travel and appointment fees and any disclosed additional charges. The appointment includes the first 30 minutes on-site.The total will be confirmed before the appointment. Please mention the worksite location and deadline when requesting a booking.I act as an authorized representative for the employer; I do not notarize Form I-9. The employer remains responsible for ensuring the form is completed in accordance with applicable requirements.
INDEPENDENT DOCUMENT WITNESSING
What is independent document witnessing? Some documents require a witness to observe a signature but do not require that witness to notarize it. Independent document witnessing is a separate service in which I attend as a witness, where appropriate, rather than performing a notarial act.The independent document witnessing service fee is $20, plus the applicable travel and appointment fees and any disclosed additional charges. The appointment includes the first 30 minutes on-site.The total will be confirmed before the appointment. Please mention the document type, location, and any deadline when requesting a booking.Independent witnessing is not notarization. Please confirm that your document requires a witness rather than a notarial act.Requirements vary by document. Please confirm with the receiving organization that an independent witness is acceptable and let me know how many witnesses are required before scheduling.
